WIP: High-Low Hem Tank Dress

April 30, 2012

My personal style is changing rapidly. I don’t know if it’s age or circumstance or season, but I’ve gone from wearing mostly jeans to mostly dresses. They are a millions times more comfortable! How was I not aware of this before?

I’ve been looking at my Pinterest boards trying to draw inspiration. I wanted to pair these two dresses for a simple high-low hem tank dress.

I used the bodice of Simplicity 2497 and made it into it dress. After making all of the alterations and a quick muslin, I laid the pattern onto the fabric I wanted to use – a black and white ikat from B&J Fabrics. I was INCHES short and couldn’t bring myself to change the pattern at all.

But I’m glad that happened because it forced me to dig through my stash! I found a striped cotton that I prefer for this dress anyway.

I used my walking foot to help with the chevron alignment. The bodice sides and all of the center seams are about spot on.

It’s all done, so I just need to get pictures. YAY!

Looks like a cute dress. I agree about the comfort of dresses (and skirts, for me) over pants/jeans. I just don’t have much of them, so I’m trying to remedy that.

I think skirts will be my next phase. I’ve had some brutal failures in that department, so I need to figure out which silhouettes look good on me.

But yes – SO COMFY. I’m a huge fan.

Wow, looking forward to seeing this on!

I can’t wait to see this! Yes to dresses!!

And OH MY GOD to the B&J (unfortunate name) ikat print!! I’m so jealous – actually it was your pinterest board that pointed me to their fabulous ikat prints. So amazing!! I plan on getting some soon. How is the weight of your fabric? I’m curious…

EEH! I’ll get pictures today. :)

HAAA HAAAAA!! Way unfortunate. It was a bit stiff until I washed it, but it still definitely has some body. I’m not an expert on textiles, but I’d say that it’s still lightweight. It’s a bit sheer, too. But with body. ?!?!

Oh my GAH, this is amazing! LOVE the striped dress (and the white and aqua inspiration dress is FAB)! So, so cute! Can’t wait to see it on you (and to see what you make with the b&w ikat!

Awh, thanks! I want that dress! I think it’s so friggin’ cute.

Gah! Now I don’t know what to do with the ikat! I might just use that same Simplicity pattern, but do the waistband, side zip and gathered skirt. Not the high-low hem.

Holy stripe matching, batman! You + walking foot = genius. My mom has a similar yardage in her stash, but this is way cooler.

I always believe that things happen for a reason and this is just another example. Can’t wait to see photos!

    You are on fire lately!

Ooh, high low hems were my favorite last summer and I think so again this year. This looks so fun, I can see how you are being inspired by ikats and chevrons (I love all your Pinterest patterns!), such pretty textiles. That’s some pretty awesome stripe match. It takes so much patience, I know (and a walking foot).
